It is built in and above a steep valley, in dark gritstone, with the Piece Hall at its centre and terraces climbing the valley sides in every direction. The weather is wetter and colder than the lowland towns to the east. Resin is a surface that responds to both, and Halifax is a good place to see why.
Rain, frost and freeze-thaw the Pennine effect on a resin surface
The Pennine side of West Yorkshire gets more rain than the towns on the lowland plain, and it gets frost for longer in the year. Both matter to resin. A surface that is almost always damp grows algae and moss sooner, and a damp surface that freezes and thaws repeatedly works any small flaw wider.
That does not mean resin is a poor choice in Halifax. A well-laid, sound surface copes. It means the margin for neglect is smaller. A hairline crack that would be a cosmetic fault in a dry town can become a problem in two winters on a wet hill, and a coat that has worn thin is less able to protect what is underneath.
Steep plots, stone walls and shade what the terrain does
Many Halifax properties sit on steep plots, behind gritstone retaining walls, with the house above or below the road. Drives there are short, sharp and often partly in shade from the wall or the slope itself. Water runs off the hill above them and has to go somewhere.
In practice that means we look carefully at drainage at the top and bottom of the drive, and at the base of any retaining wall, where moisture collects. On a steep gradient we also treat algae as a safety matter. A green, smooth resin surface on a steep slope is a real slip hazard in wet weather.
Timing the work choosing the season for a clean and a recoat
In a wet, cold town the timing of the work matters more than it does elsewhere. A recoat needs the surface dry and a spell of settled weather to cure properly. Late spring and summer give the best chance of that. Autumn is the time to clean and treat, so the drive goes into winter free of leaf litter and growth.
If your drive is showing its age, it is worth acting before the winter rather than after, so frost has less to work on. Our guide to when a resin drive is ready for a recoat sets out the signs to look for and what they mean.
Before you book anything
If you are still weighing it up, two of our guides cover the questions Halifax homeowners ask most: why resin drives go green and what to do about loose stones. The work itself is set out on our resin recoating page. Neighbouring areas we cover include Huddersfield, Bradford and Dewsbury, and the whole region is on the areas hub.
Common questions
- Which parts of Halifax do you cover?
- The HX postcodes that fall within our West Yorkshire area, including Skircoat Green, King Cross, Pellon, Illingworth, Ovenden, Southowram and Warley. Send us your postcode and we will confirm whether we reach you.
- Is resin a good choice on a steep drive?
- It can be, if it is laid well and kept in good condition. Drainage matters more on a slope, and a worn or algae-covered surface is slippery. We would check the drainage and the surface before recommending a restoration.
- When is the best time of year to have a resin drive recoated?
- The surface needs to be dry and the weather settled while the coating cures, so late spring and summer are best. Cleaning and treating can be done in autumn to clear leaf litter and growth before winter.
