Bradford is a big city, and a surface-care question there has no single answer. The housing runs from grand stone villas on the hills to terraced streets and large outlying estates, and the resin on them was laid by many different firms over the years. What links it all is the ground: the city sits in a bowl of hills and almost every street has a slope to it.

Working out what you have bound, bonded or an overlay

In a city this size, the drives come from every period and every installer. Some are resin-bound, where the stone is mixed into the resin and the finish is smooth and porous. Some are resin-bonded, where stone is scattered over a resin coat and the finish is rougher and sheds stones as it ages. Some are overlays on an old tarmac or concrete slab.

They are cleaned and restored differently, so identifying them is the first step. If you are not sure which one you have, read our guide to resin-bound and resin-bonded surfaces. At an assessment we establish it, and what is underneath, before suggesting anything.

Slopes, villas and the old stone where the hills do the damage

Heaton, Eccleshill and Thackley and many of the other suburbs on the hillsides have stone-built houses on sloping plots. Water runs across and down those drives, so the bottom of the slope wears and greens first. Stone walls and mature planting on those older plots add shade, and shaded resin stays damp.

On a steep drive, a clean has to be done in a sensible order and with the runoff in mind, from the top down. Where the surface has lost its texture, it is also worth thinking about grip. A resin surface that has worn smooth and holds algae is genuinely slippery on a gradient, and that is a good reason to restore it rather than just clean it.

Busy drives and city living oil, tracked-in dirt and parking

City drives work harder. They are parked on more, turned on more, and sit nearer to busy roads, so they collect road film, brake dust, tyre marks and oil. Fresh oil is easier to deal with than old, and surface marking usually comes out. Oil that has soaked into the binder over months may leave a stain that cleaning only lightens.

We cover the parts of Bradford that sit within our area, and the city is large enough that some of it falls outside. If you are on the edge of it, give us your postcode and we will tell you plainly whether we reach you, rather than leave you guessing.

Before you book anything

If you are still weighing it up, two of our guides cover the questions Bradford homeowners ask most: whether a resin driveway can be resealed and what resin restoration costs and why. The work itself is set out on our resin restoration page. Neighbouring areas we cover include Leeds, Batley and Halifax, and the whole region is on the areas hub.

Common questions

Which parts of Bradford do you cover?
The BD postcodes that fall within our West Yorkshire area, including Heaton, Eccleshill, Idle, Thackley, Wibsey, Clayton, Allerton and Thornton. Bradford is a large city, so send us your postcode and we will confirm whether we reach you.
There is an oil stain on my resin drive. Can it be removed?
Fresh oil usually cleans out. Oil that has soaked into the binder over a long period may only lighten. We assess it on site and tell you honestly what a clean will achieve before any work is booked.
How do I know whether my drive is bound or bonded?
Look and feel. A bound drive is smooth, with the stone set flush in the resin. A bonded drive is rough and may drop stones when you scuff it. Our guide explains the differences, and we confirm it at the assessment.
