Dewsbury is a mill town in the Heavy Woollen District, built along the River Calder and climbing the hillsides above it. Almost nothing in the town is flat for long. Streets run up and across slopes, houses are stepped into the hill, and driveways are often steep. That gradient is the main thing that sets resin in Dewsbury apart from the same surface laid on the flat.

Water that never stands still what a slope does to a resin surface

On a flat drive, rain soaks in evenly and the surface wears evenly. On a sloping one, a good share of the water runs across the top and down towards the lowest point, taking fine soil and grit with it. Over several winters that leaves a visible pattern: clean, bright resin high up, and a darker, damper, greener band at the bottom where everything ends up.

The bottom of a sloping drive is also where the road, the gutter and the threshold meet, so it is where edges fail first. A little standing water at the foot of the slope, a lifted edge or a hairline crack there is worth dealing with early, because it lets water in beneath the surface.

Hillside housing and small plots the drives we are most often asked about

The terraces in areas such as Westtown and Savile Town have little or no frontage, so resin there tends to be a short parking space or a path. In the suburbs further out, such as Thornhill, Earlsheaton and Dewsbury Moor, there is generally more room for a drive, and the slopes are still there.

Steep drives are harder to keep safe as well as clean. Algae on a slope is a slip risk, and a resin surface that has lost its texture to wear is slipperier than one that is intact. That is a practical reason to deal with green growth sooner on a sloping Dewsbury drive than you might on a level one.

Cleaning a slope properly pressure, direction and runoff

Cleaning a sloping drive is not just a matter of turning up the pressure. Working from the top down lets the dirty water run away from the part you have already finished. Holding the lance at a steady distance and angle keeps the binder intact, where blasting at a slope tends to gouge channels in it.

Runoff matters as well. Dirty water and algae treatment shouldn't be left to pour off the drive into the road or a neighbour's garden, so on steep plots we manage where it goes. It is a small detail but a real one on a hillside, and it is part of why we would rather look at a drive than quote for it over the phone.

Before you book anything

If you are still weighing it up, two of our guides cover the questions Dewsbury homeowners ask most: why resin drives go green and what resin restoration costs and why. The work itself is set out on our resin restoration page. Neighbouring areas we cover include Batley, Horbury, Ossett and Huddersfield, and the whole region is on the areas hub.

Common questions

Which parts of Dewsbury do you cover?
The WF12 and WF13 postcodes, including Thornhill, Earlsheaton, Ravensthorpe, Savile Town, Westtown, Dewsbury Moor and Hanging Heaton. Send us your postcode if you are unsure.
My drive is steep. Can it still be cleaned and recoated?
Yes. Steep drives are cleaned from the top down and recoated in sections so the surface cures evenly. We take care over runoff and over the finish at the bottom, where water collects.
The bottom of my drive is green and the top is clean. Why?
Water, soil and leaf litter run downhill and settle at the lowest point, which stays damp longest. That is where algae takes hold first. Treating that area, and checking the edge and threshold for lifting, usually puts it right.
