Ossett is a compact stone-built town on rising ground a few miles west of Wakefield. From the centre, with its Victorian terraces and market streets, the town spreads outwards in rings of later housing, and it is those estates where most of the resin drives are. The thing to know about Ossett is that it sits high. Weather arrives here before it reaches the valley, and a resin surface feels it.

An exposed site wind, rain and frost

On high ground the rain is driven harder and the wind dries some surfaces quickly while leaving others, in the lee of a wall or a hedge, wet for days. That uneven drying shows up as patchy green growth that follows the shelter of the boundary. If your drive is only green in the corner that the wind does not reach, that is why.

Frost is the other factor. Water that has soaked into the surface or into a hairline gap freezes, expands, and works the gap a little wider each winter. A surface that is sealed and sound shrugs that off. One with open voids, failed edges or cracks does not, which is why a pre-winter check is worth doing on an Ossett drive.

Winter grit and salt what it does to resin

Roads on a hill get gritted, and grit and de-icing salt are tracked onto the drive on tyres and boots. Salt in itself will not destroy a resin surface, but it does sit in the voids, holds moisture there and leaves a pale residue on dark aggregate. Grit scours the surface a little each time it is driven over.

A rinse after the worst of the winter takes most of it away. If the drive has gone dull and chalky by spring rather than simply dirty, that is more likely to be the binder weathering, and a recoat rather than a clean is what brings back the depth of colour.

Estates, villages and the edges of town what we usually find

The areas around the centre, such as Gawthorpe, Healey, Flushdyke and Southdale, are largely twentieth-century housing on plots wide enough for a driveway. Where neighbouring drives were laid by the same firm at around the same time, they tend to age in step, and the same finish, and the same fault, can appear along a whole road.

A drive that is a few years old and has begun to fade is not failing. It is at the point where a clean and recoat will restore it cheaply. Leave it long enough for stones to start lifting and you move from a recoat to a repair. Our guide on when a resin drive is ready for a recoat covers the signs.

Before you book anything

If you are still weighing it up, two of our guides cover the questions Ossett homeowners ask most: what to expect from a new resin drive and what to do about loose stones. The work itself is set out on our resin driveway restoration and sealing page. Neighbouring areas we cover include Horbury, Wakefield and Dewsbury, and the whole region is on the areas hub.

Common questions

Which parts of Ossett do you cover?
The WF5 postcodes, including Gawthorpe, Healey, Flushdyke, Southdale and Ossett Green, and the villages around the town. Send us your postcode if you are on the edge and want it confirmed.
Does frost damage a resin driveway?
A sound, sealed resin surface copes with frost well. Damage tends to start where water can get in: hairline cracks, lifted edges, or a binder that has worn thin. That water freezes and widens the gap, which is why we deal with those early.
My dark resin drive has a pale chalky look this spring. Is that salt?
It can be. De-icing salt leaves a pale residue on dark aggregate that a rinse and clean usually removes. If it persists after cleaning, it is more likely to be the binder weathering, which is what a recoat is for.
